在舊約聖經，你會讀到多處父親祝福子孫的記載。這些祝福代表接納，而接納正是建立自尊的基石。祝福你的孩子可增強他們的自我形象，有助於鞏固他們對自我的認同。
史摩利和川特 (Gary Smalley & John Trent) 兩位在其合著的《祝福》(The Blessing) 一書中，提到祝福含有五要素：
第一是有意義的觸摸。根據研究顯示，愛的觸摸可大大促進身體及情緖的健康。擁抱孩子、用手摸摸他的頭、輕揑他的膀臂，以此表達你對他的愛與接納，能使你們的親子關係更親密。
第二，祝福可藉語言傳達—愛、肯定、接納的言語。每天以仁慈的話來祝福你的孩子，留心有什麼可誇讚孩子的事情，特別是那些你視爲理所當然的好行爲。將你可用的正面鼓勵話，列成一張清單。
第三個祝福的要素，是向孩子表示你極看重他。視他爲特殊人物，並以言語表達出來。讓孩子知道你不僅視他爲珍寶，而且對他有信心。

最後一個要素是，父母要積極委身，樂意竭盡所能幫助孩子發揮潛力。這意謂你要付出時間、資源與自己，也意謂你要操練自己不斷成長、追求，做孩子的好模範與前導。如何做呢？每天爲孩子禱告，透過身教、言教來傳達上帝的話。這也意謂你要幫助孩子，發展上帝賜給他的特質、恩賜。在你祝福孩子的同時，你會發現自己的生命，也蒙受奇妙的祝福。
