My oldest daughter once told me something that both touched and saddened me. She said that when I first married my husband, she felt so relieved and excited after I made them their first meal—because she realized she now had a mom who could cook. At first, I was flattered by her words. But as I thought more deeply about it, I realized how heartbreaking it is that a child would even have to worry about something like that. It’s a quiet indictment of modern culture that something so basic—like a woman knowing how to cook for her family—has become rare enough to be surprising. Somewhere along the way, many women were sold the idea that domestic skills are beneath them, or that being a wife and mother is somehow a lesser calling compared to chasing a career. And as a result, we now have a generation where many women genuinely don’t know how to prepare a meal, run a household, or nurture the next generation. I’m not saying careers are inherently wrong. But when they come at the expense of the home, something foundational is lost—not just practically, but emotionally and spiritually. Children thrive in homes where they feel cared for, where routines like meals and shared chores form the rhythm of life. A career may bring in money or prestige, but it doesn’t bring warmth to the dinner table or security to a child’s heart. My greatest calling—and my greatest concern—is to train my daughters to be godly, loving, capable wives and mothers. That’s the kind of legacy I want to leave behind. I include them in the kitchen when I cook. Sometimes I challenge them to plan and prepare dinner themselves. And even our youngest—just a year old—loves to help. She grabs the broom out of my hands to “sweep” and toddles after us during laundry. She doesn’t know it yet, but she’s already learning the joy of serving her family. The world may not value homemaking like it once did—but in our home, we honor it. Because there is dignity, strength, and eternal value in raising a family with love and intention.
